Abi and Pascale had only met this girl once before, even though Chris had been friends with John Bullivant (K's father) since high school (!) They had moved to Hornsby soon after Katharine turned one, and it was now her fourth birthday.
K was obsessed with sharks, pretending to be one, playing with shark figures and wearing a shark swim cap. Abi waited for a while after getting into the house before she felt comfortable enough to give K her gift (book on sharks and other sea creatures).
Abi and Pascale relaxed when they were allowed to play in the back garden. The swing set was a favourite, especially the double facing seater swing. When Pascale saw the sand pit she immediately reached for the sand and stepped inside, pouring sand into the lap of her party dress. Abi made friends with Ellen, daughter of Lee and Ian, who was a similar age. They played naughty chipmunks on the swing set. Pascale hung around with Ellen's sister Caitlin, who was of her age too.
