For the second time this term Abi had a private swimming lesson at MLC aquatic. As a finale to the term, the instructors took their charges to the diving pool and let them go off the racing blocks, and then off the one metre high diving board. Abi's teacher decided to take Abi swimming across the big pool instead of walking around it to the board.
Wearing a bubble on her back and with a noodle for floatation, Abi happily paddled ("rode her bicycle") and chatted until they reached the end of the pool. There was a little ride (holding onto the teacher's shoulders) to give Abi a little rest along the way.
After jumping off the blocks, Abi and teacher stepped up to the diving board. Abi looked down and agreed to go off. The teacher picked up Abi and they jumped off! Abi surfaced first, with a BIG smile on her face and laughing aloud. However she didn't want to go off the board again so teacher and pupil swam back to the floating divider in the pool for some chatting and swim practice.
The final thing Abi did was to float on her back unaided and not held by the teacher. Her mother was amazed. Firstly the teacher got Abi to try lying on her back in the star position with a floatation bubble on her chest. Then she did it again with no-one holding and no bubble. Abi just lay very still and looked up at the ceiling as she was told. The teacher was surprised that Abi was able to do this and promised more floatation exercises next term.
After her lesson Abi wanted her mum to get into the water asap to continue the fun. Mum declined to jump off the diving board, esp as the next lesson's kids were heading there for their turn. After about half an hour paddling around with the noodle as alternatively a horse and bus, Abi tried to float like a star again. But she was getting tired and couldn't keep still for excitement so it wasn't as successful.
She had been swimming for about an hour, almost non-stop, so understandably fell asleep in the car on the way to lunch while holding her (dripping) chocolate Billabong ice cream.
